September Agency Meeting Topics

RAY BROOK- This month's Adirondack Park Agency meeting is being held at the Water's Edge Inn and Conference Center in Old Forge, Sept. 11th and 12th, where Agency Members and Designees will review one new project and three permit-renewal requests, and honor Mr. Clarence Petty with an Award of Special Recognition to celebrate a lifetime of service dedicated to the people and resources of the Adirondack Park.

In the Parkside Room, beginning at 9 a.m. on Thursday, the Agency will present Mr. Clarence Petty with a Special Recognition Award for his lifelong contributions to the Adirondack Park.

"It is impossible to talk about the Adirondack Park without someone mentioning Clarence Petty and what he has contributed here," said Agency Chairman Richard H. Lefebvre. "Aside from all the work he has done laying the foundation for the Wilderness areas of the Park, and his work with the Agency, Mr. Petty is a true humanitarian and worthy of more praise than words can express."

After the recognition, Regulatory Programs Committee Members will meet to review a new project involving the rehabilitation of a 40-mile stretch of the Warren County Railroad. The work includes vegetation removal and control measures, track repairs, bridge/culvert repairs and improvements, and road-crossing improvements. Members will also consider three permit-renewal requests on Thursday in the towns of Wells (Hamilton County), Ohio (Herkimer County), and Altamont (Franklin County).

During lunch on Thursday, Town of Webb Officials will make an informational presentation to Agency Members and those in attendance about their proposed Local Land Use Plan. The Plan was prepared by the Master Plan Advisory Committee, chaired by Robert Wheeler, with assistance from the New York Planning Federation, and contains sections on the early history of the town, resources, and opportunities available in Webb presently.

From 1:30 to 2:30 p.m. on Thursday, Legal/Enforcement Committee Members will meet in the Mountain View Room and from 2:30 to 3:30 p.m., the Ecology/Interpretive Programs Committee will meet. During the Interpretive Programs Committee meeting, facility managers from both Visitors Interpretive Centers will discuss the Interpretive Programs Division Vision Statement and discuss a plan for the Interpretive Programs Division program goals.

CAP-21, a regional not-for-profit organization that provides a forum for community concerns, interests and aspirations of residents in the West Central Adirondacks, will host a community tour and discussion with the Agency at the CAP-21 offices in downtown Old Forge from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. on Thursday. CAP-21 Executive Director, Lani Ulrich, will highlight important community improvement initiatives with which her organization is involved.

At 8:30 a.m. on Friday, the Ecology Programs Committee will meet in the Parkside Room. Ray Curran, Supervisor of Resource Analysis Scientific Services, will give a presentation on his recent trip to the Galapagos Islands and the ecosystems there. Steve Erman, Economic Affairs Special Assistant, will talk about the eco-tourism of the Galapagos economy.

There will be no State Land/Planning Committee meeting held this month. The Bog River Unit Management Plan will be the subject of a special presentation in October by Dr. Chad Dawson, of SUNY Environmental Science and Forestry, who will assist in collecting public use data called for in the UMP. Agency action on a final text for the UMP is anticipated in November.

The next Agency meeting will be held Oct. 10th at the Adirondack Park Agency headquarters in Ray Brook, and Oct. 11th at the Paul Smith's Visitor Interpretive Center. As always, the public is welcome to attend Agency monthly meetings. For more information, please contact Victoria Hristovski at (518) 891-4050.
