October Agency Meeting News

RAY BROOK - Members of the Adirondack Park Agency met October 10th and 11th in Ray Brook and at the Adirondack Park Visitors Interpretive Center in Paul Smiths to welcome a new member of staff, receive updates involving Agency initiatives and business, and to consider three new projects.

On Thursday, October 10th, Agency board members and designees welcomed Shaun LaLonde as the new Soil and Water Engineer for the Agency. Mr. LaLonde is a licensed Professional Engineer (P.E.), has a B.A. in Geology from SUNY Potsdam, and a B.S. in Civil Engineering from Clarkson University. He obtained a variety of experiences while working at DEC for the past 14. He has extensive experience with environmental compliance, including preparation of remediation plans, testimony in adversarial proceedings and assisting in the preparation of notices of violation and material for pending enforcement cases. He has worked with local governments in the Park, the EPA, NYS Department of Health and the Office of Emergency Preparedness.

"Shaun's background is a great complement to this Agency and makes him well suited for the work he will encounter here," said APA Chairman Richard Lefebvre. "We extend our warmest welcome and wishes for a very long and happy stay here."

Three projects were approved at this month's meeting: the construction of a steel water tank in the Village of Lake George, Warren County; A self-storage business in the Town of Fort Ann, Washington County, and a three-lot subdivision in the Towns of Long Lake in Hamilton County and Piercefield, in St. Lawrence County. Agency members and designees also discussed the possible construction of a 97-hotel in Lake George in Warren County. Assuming no issues are raised by Agency members or public which identifies significant adverse impacts not addressed by the project application, Deputy Director of Regulatory Programs, Mark Sengenberger, intends to make the permit decision after the close of the public comment period.

Board members were invited to the United States Olympic Training Center in Lake Placid to take a tour of the facilities thousands of athletes have utilized on their journey to the Olympics, and to discuss the economic impacts the Training Center has on the region.

On Friday, the full Board met at the Adirondack Park Agency's Visitors Interpretive Center (VIC) in Paul Smiths to conduct Agency business. Friday began with a celebration of the grand opening of the new Adirondack Wetlands Exhibit at the VIC, and the dedication of the Wildflower Garden at the VIC to Frank M. Hutchins.

A presentation on Public Use Data was given by Dr. Chad Dawson, of the SUNY Environmental Science and Forestry, on methods of collecting user data, and the concepts of carrying capacity.

The Board concluded its meeting on Friday, Oct. 11th at 12:30 p.m., and joined the API for an informal luncheon.

The next Agency meeting will be held Nov. 14th and 15th at the headquarters in Ray Brook. For more information, please contact Victoria Hristovski, (518) 891-4050 ext. 173.
