October Agency Meeting Topics


RAY BROOK, NY - The Adirondack Park Agency will hold its regularly scheduled monthly meeting on October 9th and 10th. In addition, on Wednesday the 8th the Agency will meet at 1:30 pm in the Town of Newcomb to tour the recently acquired property by the Open Space Institute. No official business will be conducted on this day.

Highlights from this month’s meeting are Chairman Ross S. Whaley convening his first Agency meeting, introduction of, Keith P. McKeever, the new Director of Public Relations and the departure of, Hillary Oles, Project Coordinator for the Adirondack Park Invasive Plant Program. Chairman Whaley said "I look forward to my first meeting with excitement over the opportunity to play a small role in the future of the Adirondack Park. The Park offers an opportunity to be a model of sustainable development for the world. This is possible because of a balanced and dedicated board, a hard working and professional staff, and citizens who share a common concern for the resources and people of the Park."

The meeting on the 9th will be held at the Harrietstown Town Hall on Main Street in Saranac Lake. On the 10th, the Agency will meet at the Tannery Pond Community Center. The Community Center is located on Main Street in the Town of North Creek opposite Town Hall.

The Full agency meeting will begin on Thursday morning at 9:00 am. The Committee meetings will commence at 10:00 am. First, the Regulatory Programs Committee will discuss a shoreline structure setback variance. Following that the State Land Committee, with representation from DEC, will present the Independence River Wild Forest Unit Management Plan Amendment. At 11:30 am the Administration Committee will hold a discussion on the Code of Ethics for Per Diem Board.

After lunch the Park Ecology Committee will hear a report from the Adirondack Park Invasive Plants Program by the project coordinator. With completion of phase one, Ms. Oles will leave the Agency and coordinate this initiative at the Nature Conservancy in Keene. Next the Interpretive Programs Committee will present the state of the Visitor Interpretive Centers. At 2:30 the Enforcement Committee will discuss a shoreline setback for a low intensity use area in the Town of Schroon. In the last session of the day the Legal Affairs Committee will discuss the “floor space” definition in anticipation of future regulatory revision.

On Friday October 10th at 9:00 am, Supervisor William Thomas will welcome the Agency to the Tannery Pond Community Center in the Town of North Creek. Immediately following the Supervisor will be a presentation on the Hudson River Interpretive Project by Kathi Tevlin and Michael Clarke of Tevlin & Clarke, the Agency’s consultants on this scenic byway project.

Beginning at 10:30 am the Agency will hear interim and committee reports. In addition the Agency will hear comments from the Local Government Review Board as well as Public Comments.

The November Agency meeting will be held November 13-14, 2003 at ORDA facilities in the Village of Lake Placid.
