NOVEMBER 2003

1 SAFK: Nature’s Textures 10 ? 11:30 a.m. Kids ages 5-10 are invited to explore the textures in nature. Paper and crayons will be provided for kids to do rubbings of tree bark, leaves or rocks. Pre-registration is required. Free.

8 SAFK: Glacial Geology 10 ? 11:30 a.m. This program for kids 6-12 years old will provide a look at some of the post glacial land formations here at the VIC. Pre-registration is required. Free

15 SAFK: Birdfeeders from Throwaways 10 ? 11:00 a.m. Kids of all ages are encouraged to partake in America Recycles Day. The VIC will be reusing half gallon milk cartons and turning them into birdfeeders. Brochures and other information will be available on how to recycle and buy recycled products. Pre-Registration is required. Free.

22 Cornucopia Basket 10 a.m. ? 4 p.m. Join Clear Creek Weavers to build this unique basket that will surely be the conversation piece on your Thanksgiving table. Participants need to bring a bag lunch. Pre-registration is required. The fee is $40 ($35 for API members).

6 Boreal Life Snowshoe Walk 10 ? 11:30 a.m. Join a naturalist as we walk this trail looking for animals and their signs. In the event that there is not enough snow we will walk instead of snowshoe. Snowshoes will be provided. Wear boots. Pre-registration is required. Free.

13 SAFK: Scat 10 ? 11:30 a.m. Do you know your doo? This program is for 5-12 year olds who want to improve their skills at the identification of animal droppings. A portion of this program will be outside looking for the stuff. Pre-registration is required. Free.

14 Natural Ornaments 1 ? 3 p.m. Bring the family out for this perennial favorite and craft an ornament out of natural materials. Amaze yourself with some of the creations. Drop in. $3 per family to cover cost of supplies (API members free).

20 SAFK & Adults: Holiday Handle Basket 10 a.m. ? 1:00 p.m. Kids and adults can join Clear Creek Weavers and create a holiday basket made out of red and green reeds. You may want to bring a bag lunch or a snack. Pre-registration is required. $10 per basket ($8 for API members).

21 Otter Search 1 ? 3 p.m. The otters were commonly seen on the marsh during the summer. For this program we will revisit some of those sites with a naturalist looking for slides, tracks or hopefully the otters themselves. Snowshoes will be provided. Pre-registration is required. Free.

JANUARY 2004

3 SAFK: Snowshoes on Snowshoes 10 ? 11:30 a.m. Kids 5-12 are welcome to come out and search for snowshoe hares on snowshoes. We will look for signs of these fuzzy creatures and learn some interesting factoids so you will be prepared next time you are on Jeopardy. Pre-registration is required. Free.

9 Night Hike: Owl Prowl 6 ? 8 p.m. The search for these night hunters will be on. We will walk and hoot for owls in hope of getting a response. Afterwards we will warm ourselves around a campfire. Meet at the VIC. Pre-registration is required. Free.

10 SAFK: Winter Trees 10 ? 11:30 a.m. Kids 6-12 will learn how to identify some common trees in the forest by looking at their buds and bark. Pre-registration is required. Free.

11 Northwoods Loop 1 ? 3 p.m. Get out of the house and explore the wonders of the Adirondack woods. Snowshoes are available for this hike. Pre-registration is required. Free.

17 Packbasket Workshop 9:15 a.m. ? 4:30 p.m. Clear Creek Weavers are back with this very popular workshop. Make your own piece of an Adirondack tradition. Bring a bag lunch. Pre-registration is required. $50 medium/$60 large (API members subtract $10).

18 Chilly Ski Festival 10 a.m. - 3 p.m. This family-oriented day will showcase cross-country skiing at the VIC, fun competition for prizes, learn-to-ski workshops and a ski waxing clinic. Chili, cornbread and beverages will be available. Admission to the Chilly Ski Festival is just $3 per person ($7 per family), and the entry fee includes free ski rentals, hot beverages and attendance at all the workshops. Register at the door. The Chilly Ski Festival is co-sponsored by the Adirondack Park Institute and the Saranac Lake Area Chamber of Commerce. Rentals and clinics will be offered by High Peaks Cyclery of Lake Placid.

24 Birds of an Adirondack Winter 9:30 ? 11:30 a.m. Join NYS licensed guide and bird expert Brian McAllister, of Borealis Nature Tours, for a morning bird walk to see what types of birds are wintering here. Pre-registration required. Free.

25 Esker Trail Guided Ski 1 ? 3:30 p.m. Join a naturalist for a guided ski trip around the Esker Trail. After our 4 mile loop enjoy a cup of hot chocolate in our sunspace. Due to the terrain you need to be an intermediate level skier. Ski equipment is not provided. Pre-registration is required. Free.

31 SAFK: Winter Tracking 10 ? 11:30 a.m. Kids ages 6-12 can get out on snowshoes to search for stories in the snow. Enjoy the winter world in a unique way. Pre-registration required. Free.

FEBRUARY 2004

1 Long Pond Snowshoe 1 ? 3:30 p.m. Come on out and get rid of that restless energy. Join a naturalist on this snowshoe out to Long Pond. Bring a snack to have at the Lean-to. Pre-registration is required. Free.

Feb. 6 ? 15 Saranac Lake Winter Carnival

20 Night Hike: Winter Woods 6 ? 8 p.m. We will walk a trail listening to the sounds and enjoy the peacefulness of the winter woods. Then wind down the evening around a campfire and marshmallow roasting. Pre-registration required. Free.

21 SAFK & Adults: Mini Packbasket Workshop 10 a.m. ? 2 p.m. Kids ages 9-14 and adults can join Clear Creek Weavers to create a mini packbasket. This basket is 7 inches high and would be perfect for you to dress up that special teddy bear. Pre-registration is required. $22 per basket ($20 for API members).

22 Ice Fishing Demonstration 1 p.m. ? 3 p.m. Families are welcome to join David MacDowell as he shows us the ins and outs of this popular winter sport. Fishing supplies will be provided. Please call the VIC for details on where to meet. Drop in. Free.

28 SAFK & Adults: Snow Shelters 1 ? 3 p.m. Kids 5-12 and Adults can have fun learning a possibly life saving technique of turning a snow bank into a cozy cave. Dress appropriately for the day and bring a shovel. Pre-registration required. Free.

29 Leap Year Lark 1 -3 p.m. Not sure what to do on this extra day of the year? Why not come out to the VIC and walk or snowshoe a trail with a naturalist. Pre-registration required. Free.
