Beginner’s Snowshoe How-to at Newcomb VIC

NEWCOMB, NY – Upcoming activities at the Adirondack Park Agency Visitor Interpretive Center (VIC) in Newcomb will include a “Beginner’s Snowshoe How-to” workshop and an off-site birding trip on snowshoes.

Before buying a pair of expensive snowshoes, VIC naturalists encourage residents and visitors to participate in the Beginner’s Snowshoe How-to workshop from 1 to 3 p.m. on Sunday, Jan. 9.

“We start off inside with an overview of the history of snowshoeing and look at different styles of snowshoes,” said VIC Environmental Educator 1 Ellen Rathbone. “Then we head out on the trails with each person equipped with a pair of MSR snowshoes.”

Rathbone will teach people how to walk, turn and run in the snow. Preregistration is required for this free workshop by calling the Newcomb VIC at (518) 582-2000.

The following weekend, members of the High Peaks Audubon Society will lead the Hanging Spear Falls Trail Bird Walk. Join Amy Freiman and Joan Collins for a snowshoe bird walk on the scenic Hanging Spear Falls Trail on Saturday, Jan. 15. The trip starts at 9:30 a.m., and preregistration is required by Jan. 6 for this free outing. People need to bring their own snowshoes. Call the Newcomb VIC at (518) 582-2000 to register and for information about the meeting place.

The New York State Adirondack Park Agency operates two VICs, in Paul Smiths and Newcomb, which are open year-round from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily except Christmas and Thanksgiving. They offer a wide array of educational programs, miles of interpretive trails and visitor information services. Admission is free.

The Newcomb VIC is located about 12 miles east of Long Lake on state Route 28N. For more information about the VICs, log on to the centers’ Web site at www.northnet.org/adirondackvic.
