UMP Public Comment Period

RAY BROOK, NY – The Adirondack Park Agency is seeking public comments, until August 3rd, concerning compliance for the Final Wilmington Wild Forest (WWF) Draft Unit Management Plan (UMP) with the Adirondack Park State Land Master Plan (APSLMP).

The WWF is located in portions of the Town of Black Brook, Clinton County and in the Towns of Jay, Keene and Wilmington in Essex County. The unit, approximately 13,231 acres, consists of several detached Forest Preserve parcels within a 10-mile radius of the hamlet of Wilmington. WWF lies in the shadows of Whiteface Mountain, the fifth highest peak in New York State.

Potential for a variety of recreational activities abound. The existing road network lends itself to a higher level of facilities and well-marked trails, as compared to remote Wilderness areas. The plan proposes construction of new mountain biking, snowmobiling, hiking and fishing access trails. Improvements to serve persons with disabilities are included.

This draft UMP does not include the Wilmington Notch Public Campground, the Whiteface Veteran’s Memorial Highway, the Whiteface Mountain Ski Area and the State University of New York’s (SUNY at Albany) Atmospheric Science Research Center on Whiteface Mountain. These units are managed separately.
