RAY BROOK, NY - The Adirondack Park Agency will hold its regularly scheduled monthly meeting on January 12 and 13 at the Agency’s headquarters in Ray Brook, NY.
At 9:15, the State Land Committee will convene for action on the Lewey Lake Public Campground Intensive Use Area Unit Management Plan (UMP). The campground, located in Hamilton County between the hamlets of Indian Lake and Speculator, contains 209 campsites, day use picnic areas and provides access to Indian and Lewey Lakes. DEC staff will give a first reading on the Northhampton Beach Campground and Gore Mountain Intensive Use Area UMPs as well as provide an overview of the public release final draft for the Blue Ridge Wilderness UMP.
At 11:15, the Full Agency will convene for a presentation by the Planning Division. The presentation will highlight the division’s responsibilities and operational procedures.
At 1:00, the Interpretive Program Committee will learn about the Agency’s latest exhibit at the Paul Smiths Visitor Interpretive Center - "Trip of a Drip." This exciting watershed awareness program is a collaborative effort between the Agency and the Lake Champlain Basin Program. The exhibit visualizes the descent of an Adirondack raindrop as it falls from the sky and eventually tumbles into Lake Champlain. At 1:30, the Regulatory Programs Committee will consider two permits and the renewal of one general permit. The Otter Lake Improvement Association proposes to release sterile grass carp into Otter Lake to provide long-term biological control of nuisance wetland vegetation. Otter Lake is located in Forestport, Oneida County. The Town of North Elba proposes improvements to its municipal airport. The project involves removal of trees and brush, installation of road signs and fence lighting. The committee will also consider renewal of a general permit to allow Transportation Departments to continue removal or modification of recently constructed beaver dams.
At 3:00, the Park Ecology Committee will assemble for two presentations on Acid Deposition in the Adirondacks. Karen Roy, Research Scientist, Division of Air Resources at DEC, will present findings from two recent publications that the Adirondack Lakes Survey Corporation collaborated on: An Assessment of Recovery and Key Processes Affecting the Response of Surface Waters to Reduced Levels of Acidic Precipitation in the Adirondack and Catskill Mountains and Acid Rain and the Adirondacks: A Research Summary. The Agency’s Supervisor of Natural Resource Analysis, Daniel Spada, will also inform the Park Ecology Committee on the Adirondack Park Aquatic Nuisance Species Management Plan final draft. Mr. Spada will discuss plan development and next steps.
At 4:00, the Enforcement Committee will meet for the enforcement program report.
On Friday, January 13, the Economic Affairs/Local Government Services Committees will review the Workforce/Affordable Housing Forums. The Economic Affairs and Local Government Services Committees sponsored forums on workforce/affordable housing on November 4, 2005 and December 9, 2005. Committee members and involved staff will review issues raised at these forums and plan follow-up efforts to keep momentum spinning in the right direction. Agency staff will also highlight its annual Local Government Day. The event, planned for March 23-24, 2006, will once again be held at The Hotel Saranac.
The Full Agency will convene at 10:15 to hear committee reports and take actions as appropriate.
