March Agency Meeting Topics

RAY BROOK - The Adirondack Park Agency will meet on March 15 and 16, at the headquarters in Ray Brook, where in accordance with the Agency’s new Public Comment Policy, there will be a 10-minute public comment period at the beginning of each Agency meeting. The meeting will commence at 9 a.m. on Thursday.

At the beginning of Thursday’s meeting, Agency Chairman Richard H Lefebvre and Agency members will welcome Ed Snizek as a new member of staff. Ed comes to the Agency as an enforcement officer with his most recent experience as the director of environmental health for the Clinton County Department of Health. He obtained a bachelor in Biology from Old Dominion University and a master in Zoology from DePauw University in 1983. Ed enjoys the outdoors and currently resides in Vermontville with his wife and their four children.

This month’s meeting will feature a work session to discuss draft plans to redesign the main exhibit and lobby exhibits at the Paul Smiths Visitor Interpretive Center. This interpretive discussion will take place on Thursday, beginning at 9:15 a.m. The Committee’s focus will be on how to best design the lobby in an attractive and informative manner that will make the visit more enjoyable for guests. A draft plan of the lobby exhibit proposes an events and programs panel to orient visitors and update them on upcoming programs. There is also a proposed trail sightings panel of the exhibit which will inform visitors of recent sightings of animals and plants on trails. Staff and volunteers at the Paul Smith’s VIC have been working with consultant Lisa Brochu since the fall to develop a draft proposal for the Agency’s review and comment.

During the Administration Committee meeting on Thursday, Committee members will receive a tower policy update by staff, and during the Regulatory Committee meeting, there will be a discussion of re-issuance of general permits for the removal and modification of beaver dams. Also on the Regulatory Committee’s agenda, is to review one shoreline variance project in Altamont, and an application by Lewis Family Farms Inc. in Essex for a mineral extraction project will be reviewed on Thursday from 1 to 3 p.m.

Enforcement Committee members will review two violation cases, one in the town of Stony Creek for the creation of a junkyard without Agency approval and the other in Queensbury for a wetlands violation.

Local Government Day 2001 will be discussed at the Local Government Services Committee on Friday, beginning at 9 a.m. The fourth Local Government Day will take place March 22 and 23 at the Hotel Saranac in Saranac Lake. Registrations forms may be obtained at the Adirondack Park Agency headquarters in Ray Brook, or by calling 518-891-4050.

"Several organizations have worked very hard in partnering for this event," said Adirondack Park Agency Chairman Richard Lefebvre. "This conference will address issues of local interest from all over the Adirondack community."

There will be a reception on Thursday, March 22 at 5 p.m. at the Union Depot in Saranac Lake, sponsored by the New York Planning Federation, which will include an update on railroad development in the Adirondacks. The conference will also feature SUNY Environmental Science and Forestry President Dr. Neil Murphy as a keynote speaker on Friday, March 23rd during the morning plenary session at 9 a.m.

The next Adirondack Park Agency meeting will be held April 12 and 13 at the headquarters in Ray Brook.
