May Agency Meeting Topics

RAY BROOK - Two celebrations will be had at this month’s Adirondack Park Agency meeting. The first will be held on Thursday, May 10 at the headquarters in Ray Brook and the other will be at the Paul Smiths Visitor Interpretive Center on Friday, May 11. Both events will begin at 9 a.m.

On Thursday, representatives from the Department of Environmental Conservation, the Department of Transportation, the Adirondack Nature Conservancy, the Student Conservation Association/Adirondack AmeriCorps and the Adirondack Park Agency will celebrate the signing of the Adirondack Invasive Plant Project Memorandum of Understanding. The document will be signed on Wednesday, May 9 in Lake Placid, and those involved in the signing will awarded with certificates prior to the start of the Agency meeting.

From 9 to 10 a.m. on Friday, May 11 at the Adirondack Park Visitor Interpretive Center (VIC) in Paul Smiths, a press conference and ribbon cutting ceremony will take place in honor of the Forest Ecosystem Research and Demonstration Area (FERDA) whose grant money to the Center will go towards the repair of trails used by the public. Agency Chairman Richard H. Lefebvre will cut the ribbon with representatives from the U.S. Forestry Service, International Paper Company, Paul Smith’s College, and the Adirondack Park Institute. After the formal presentation, press conference and social gathering, Agency members will conduct their meeting in the Great Room at the VIC.

During the 1 p.m. Administration Committee meeting on Thursday, at the headquarters in Ray Brook, board members and commissioners will receive a towers policy update from the LA Group, based in Saratoga Springs. The LA Group met with commissioners at last month’s Agency meeting to receive direction from the board, and to host a question-and-answer session where commissioners were informed as to current tower practices and possible practices in the future. A progress report will be given this month by the consultant on the development of draft materials in support of recommendations from last month’s meeting.

There will be four projects to come before the Regulatory Programs Committee at 10 a.m. on Thursday. There is a moderate Intensity Use variance request in the town of Chester; a review for public hearing regarding a construction project in the town of Fort Ann in Washington County; a single-family dwelling in rural use in the town of Black Brook in Clinton County, and the reconstruction of an existing dam and refilling of impoundment on Resource Management land in the town of Franklin in Franklin County.

During the Local Government Services Committee meeting at 2 p.m. on Thursday, commissioners will review the Town on Chesterfield’s Local Land Use Program. There will be a presentation and discussion of issues for a possible June adoption.

Enforcement Committee members will review two cases on Thursday beginning at 3:30 p.m. One of the cases involves a shoreline setback cutting, retaining wall and deck in Forestport, in Oneida County and the other case involves a 100-square-foot structure located 50 feet from the mean high water mark in Long Lake, Hamilton County.

Members of the public who are interested in participating in the public comment sessions held before the start of each meeting, are encouraged to attend the meeting and sign-in on the sheet located on the table in the large conference room.

The next Adirondack Park Agency meeting will be held on June 14 and 15 at the headquarters in Ray Brook
