State Land Master Plan compliance for the Ausable Point Public Campground unit management plan.

RAY BROOK, NY – The Adirondack Park Agency is accepting public comments on Adirondack Park State Land Master Plan (APSLMP) compliance for the Ausable Point Public Campground unit management plan (UMP). A final draft plan was completed by the NYS Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) and was subject to a series of public meetings and public input during the planning process. The Adirondack Park Agency will now consider compliance of the final draft plan with the State Land Master Plan prior to final adoption by DEC. The Agency will accept public comments on the proposals contained in the draft plan until 12:00 PM on June 6, 2007.

The Ausable Point Public Campground is located in the Town of Peru, Clinton County on the western shoreline of Lake Champlain between the mouth of the Little Ausable River and the upper mouth of the North Branch of the Ausable River. The 123 campsites in this facility are light to moderately forested. A number of sites have direct access to the shoreline of Lake Champlain or the Ausable River. The campsites can accommodate most types of camping equipment including tents, recreational vehicles and camping trailers. There are two accessible sites for individuals with disabilities.

A special feature of the campground is the large sandy beach on the north side, which is a major attraction for campers and day-users. This campground also consists of emergent marsh, flood plain forest, sand beach and pitch pine-heath barrens, which have been identified as possible locations for rare plants and are exemplary examples of ecological communities.

The plan addresses removal of non-compliant electric service hook-ups; improvements to campground staff sanitary facility infrastructure; stabilization of the campground shoreline and re-grading campsites; improvements to playground equipment; resurfacing campground roads and parking areas.
