Agency accepting public comment on Snowmobile Trail Mileage

RAY BROOK, NY – The Agency will accept public comment until March 4, 2008 on State Land Master Plan interpretation issues regarding Snowmobile Trail Mileage on Wild Forest lands in the Adirondack Park Forest Preserve.

Adirondack Park Agency and Department of Environmental Conservation staff presented recommendations to the Agency during its February 7, 2008 State Land Committee meeting regarding Wild Forest Basic Guideline 4 of the State Land Master Plan.

This guideline states “Public use of motor vehicles will not be encouraged and there will not be any material increase in the mileage of roads and snowmobile trails open to motorized use by the public in wild forest areas that conformed to the master plan at the time of its original adoption in 1972.”

Guideline 4 is an important consideration for Agency review of Unit Management Plans as they relate to snowmobiling on Wild Forest classified forest preserve lands.

To review staff’s presentation to the State Land Committee, please see the Agency’s website at

At the March Agency meeting, the Agency will consider this proposal to formally interpret the State Land Master Plan Basic Guideline 4 and adopt an 848.88-mile limit beyond which additions to the Wild Forest snowmobile trail network would be considered material.

The Agency welcomes public comment on the proposed interpretation of the State Land Master Plan. Please submit written comments to:
