APA Proclaims July 6 – 12, 2008 as Adirondack Park Invasive Species Awareness Week

RAY BROOK, NY – Adirondack Park Agency Proclaims July 6 – 12, 2008 as Adirondack Park Invasive Species Awareness Week.

In continuing efforts to diminish invasive species, the Agency Board passed a resolution at its June 2008 meeting proclaiming the second week of July be celebrated annually as Invasive Species Awareness Week across the Park. The Agency encourages all citizens to increase their understanding and knowledge of actions they can undertake to prevent the spread of invasive species and their economic, societal, and ecological impacts on the communities and natural resources of the Adirondack Park.

“Awareness is an important first step towards preventing the introduction and spread of invasive species, said Agency Chairman Curtis F. Stiles. It’s critical that all stakeholders advocate for more state and local resources to combat and remediate the serious threat posed by aquatic and terrestrial invasive species on the environment and economy of the Park,” he stated.

The Adirondack Park Invasive Plant Program, which serves as the Adirondack Partnership for Regional Invasive Species Management, is coordinating events for the week of July 6 – 12, 2008. Workshops, field trips, lectures, and control parties will be held throughout the Park to inform people about the issues surrounding invasive species and about the importance of native biodiversity in the Adirondacks.

Adirondack Park Invasive Plant Program Coordinator Hilary Oles said, "An informed public will help stop the spread of invasive species. Adirondack Park Invasive Species Awareness Week provides an opportunity for groups and communities to host activities throughout the region and together deliver a concentrated message about solutions to this complex challenge."
