Adirondack Park Agency Schedules Public Meetings on Proposed Revisions to Telecommunication Towers

RAY BROOK - Proposed draft revisions to the Agency’s policy on telecommunication towers in the Adirondack Park will be the subject of four public meetings the Agency has scheduled during November.

The purpose of these meetings, to be held in Indian Lake, Saranac Lake, Albany, and Syracuse, will be to solicit public comment on proposed draft revisions to the Agency’s existing policy on telecommunication towers in the Adirondack Park. The Agency’s existing policy, adopted in 1978, provides that new communication towers and other tower facilities in the Park be consolidated with existing towers.

In recognition of changing technologies utilized by the telecommunications industry and the demands of government services and public safety factors, the Agency determined in August of 2000 that the 1978 policy should be reviewed and updated. That review and assessment process, conducted with the help of a consultant, led to the development of proposed draft revisions to the policy.

In announcing the Agency’s plans to solicit comments on these proposed revisions, Agency Chairman Richard Lefebvre noted the importance of public input to the Agency in developing a revised policy. "The Agency has a responsibility to protect Adirondack Park aesthetic, open space, and other resources, and at the same time provide a reasonable telecommunication system, consistent with federal law. The Agency’s policy must take into account the Park setting and serve the needs of Adirondack Park residents and visitors."

The dates, times, and locations of the four public meetings scheduled on the proposed draft revisions are as follows:

Tuesday, November 13 7:00 p.m. INDIAN LAKE Town Hall Pelon Road (opposite Indian Lake High School)

Wednesday, November 14 7:00 p.m. SARANAC LAKE North Country Community College Science Bldg. (S-19) David W. Petty Lecture Hall

Tuesday, November 27 7:00 p.m. ALBANY Colonie Community Center Auditorium 1653 Central Ave. (Exit 2W off I-87)

Wednesday, November 28 7:00 p.m. SYRACUSE SUNY College of Environmental Science and Forestry Alumni Lounge, Marshall Hall
