Capitol Exhibit Honors Twinning of Italy's Abruzzo National Park and New York's Adirondack Park

RAY BROOK - A new exhibit honoring two historic parks, one in Italy and one in New York, will open May 2nd in the State Capitol's South State Street Entrance in Albany. Both parks combine wild lands and old (or ancient) villages seeking current vitality. Though vastly different in size, these common elements have been a foundation for dialogue and understanding between the parks and among different interests in each park.

A broadly based coalition including local government, not-for-profit and State agencies laid the foundation for a twinning agreement signed by Environmental Conservation Commissioner John Cahill in 1997. In exchanges in 1998 and 1999, residents and staff from both parks have developed fresh ideas and understanding, including new concepts like a prototype community information center expected to debut in the Town of Inlet, Hamilton County, at Inlet's May 13-14 Paddlefest Weekend.

The exhibits will be unveiled in a brief ceremony at 10:30 a.m., Tuesday, May 2, 2000, at the exhibit's location in the South State Street Entrance to the State's historic Capitol Building in Albany. They will be on display for the first two weeks during the month of May and then will move to Adirondack locations to be announced later.
