RAY BROOK - November’s meeting of the Adirondack Park Agency Board at its headquarters in Ray Brook fostered some new ideas and discussions regarding the Agency’s role in a variety of topics including tourism-based development and the issuance of general permits. Members also viewed a DVD produced by the NYS Department of Transportation on the history, redevelopment and current use of the Adirondack Railroad. The DVD was provided to APA Board Member James Frenette.
On Friday, November 16, Agency Board Members gave departing Director of Adirondack Park Interpretive Programs Sandra Bureau a plaque commemorating her years of service with the Agency and its two Visitor Interpretive Centers. She also received a standing ovation (pictured right) from the Board.
Agency members heard from local and regional tourism representatives on Friday, Nov. 16 during the Economic Affairs Committee meeting. Bill Osborne, Hamilton County; Neil Seymour, Franklin County; Ann Melious of the Adirondack Regional Tourism Council; APA Economic Development Specialist Steve Erman and VIC Senior Informational Specialist Andy Flynn discussed tourism issues with the Committee. During the hour-and-a-half discussion, the Committee and its guests discussed the importance of regional tourism and specific measures that could be taken to assist the industry.
During the Administration Services Committee meeting on Thursday Ed Hood, Assistant Director to Planning, briefed Committee Members on the progress of the Telecommunications Draft Towers Policy public meetings. As of the Agency meeting, two of the five meetings were completed and Mr. Hood reported that each meeting had good public turnout. About 35 people attended the meeting in Indian Lake and about 20 people attended the meeting in Saranac Lake.
During his Executive Director’s report on Thursday, Dan Fitts talked on the release of two new Agency publications: the 2000 Annual Report and the new Citizen’s Guide to Land Use Regulations. Three projects were reviewed during the Agency’s Regulatory Program Committee on Thursday, November 15. Approved projects included a single-family dwelling with an attached porch and garage to be set back 102 feet from the mean-high watermark of the West Branch of the AuSable River in an area classified as Low Intensity-Use in the Town of Jay, Essex County. Authorization was also given to a new commercial use and group camp in an area classified Rural Use in the Town of Corinth, Saratoga County. A permit was issued to Niagara Mohawk Power Corporation, International Paper Company and Curtis/Palmer Hydroelectric Company L.P. for the construction of a new tap structure, power line and substation involving structures over 40 feet in height in areas classified as Hamlet and Moderate Intentsity Use area in the Village of Corinth, Saratoga County, and the Town of Lake Luzerne, Warren County.
The next Adirondack Park Agency meeting will be held on December 13 and 14 at its headquarters in Ray Brook. As always, the public is welcome to attend.
