RAY BROOK- The Adirondack Park Agency meeting will be held on April 10th and 11th in the Great Room at the Paul Smith's Visitor Interpretive Center (VIC) where the next few Agency meetings will be held due to construction at the Ray Brook headquarters.
Annual Earth Day recognition awards will be given on Friday, April 11th beginning at 9 a.m.,to five individuals this year whose names will become part of a prominent display at the Agency for one year. On Friday, the five individuals will be recognized for their contributions to the Adirondack Community. This year's inductees are: George Canon, Supervisor of the Town of Newcomb, and President of the Adirondack Association of Towns and Villages; Richard Lefebvre, former Chairman of the Adirondack Park Agency; Lloyd Moore, Chairman, Adirondack Park Local Government Review Board and St. Lawrence County Legislator, District 7; Christopher Westbrook, President, Clifton-Fine Economic Development Corporation, and Hilary Oles, Program Coordinator of the Adirondack Park Aquatic Invasive Plant Program.
"Each of theses individuals are to be commended for their tireless efforts and contributions," said Adirondack Park Agency Chairman Jim Frenette. "In this, the 'Year of the Community', these inductees are not only deserving of this recognition, they set the standard for community involvement."
As Town of Newcomb Supervisor since 1990, and as founding chairman of the Adirondack Association of Towns and Villages, George Canon has actively engaged state and local leaders in important Adirondack issues such as economic development and land use planning.
As Chairman of the Adirondack Park Agency for nearly five years, Richard Lefebvre utilized un-ending energy and enthusiasm to provide greater balance in the development of policies affecting the Park and in regulatory decision making.
Lloyd Moore has served Chairman of the Adirondack Park Local Government Review Board where he has been a powerful advocate for the fair and equitable administration of the Adirondack Park Agency Act. As an elected St. Lawrence County Legislator, he has also represented the interests of his constituents in the 7th Legislative District.
Chris Westbrook has provided strong leadership to community renewal efforts in the Towns of Clifton and Fine, St. Lawrence County, and has succeeded in diversifying the local economy to include new tourism related attractions, new retail and service businesses, and a new Adirondack Park Community Information Center.
In collaboration with not-for-profit and government organizations, Hilary Oles established a truly "community-based" aquatic invasive plant control program for the Adirondack Park. This multi-faceted program involves documentation and monitoring of invasive aquatic plants and public education, and the creation of a database to further provide important information and educational tools.
Recognition will also be given to the Agency's secretarial staff for Administrative Professionals Day on Friday.
In addition to the Earth Day and Administrative Professional Celebrations, Agency Board Members and Designees will review one new project in Wilmington, Essex County, for a 22-lot subdivision at 10 a.m. on Thursday, April 10th.
Two unit management plan amendments (UMP) will be reviewed on Thursday. The first UMP amendment to be reviewed is the Hammond Pond UMP during the Regulatory Programs Committee at 9:30, where discussion will also take place about the issuance of a temporary permit for the Town of Keene parking shuttle. The Fish Creek Public Campground UMP amendment will be discussed at 11 a.m. during the State Land Committee meeting.
From 2:45 to 3:15 p.m. on Thursday, Interpretive Programs Committee members will receive a presentation of the draft strategic plan for the Interpretive Programs Division, and an overview of the Paul Smiths VIC Management Plan Development.
The next Adirondack Park Agency meeting will be held May 8-9, 2003 at the Paul Smith's Visitor Interpretive Center on Thursday, May 8, and at Town Meeting Room in the Town of Chester Town Hall on Friday, May 9.
